House name ideas: 60 names for your home (and how to choose one)

19 October 2026 · The Doorstep Edit

A house name gives a home its own character, whether it's a country cottage, a converted barn or a new-build on a quiet street. If you're looking for the right one, here are some ideas to start from.

Names from nature

Willow House · The Orchard · Meadow View · Brook Cottage · Fernleigh · Hazelwood · Bramble Cottage · Foxgloves · Heather Lodge · Primrose Cottage

Names from trees

The Oaks · Ashdown · Rowan House · Hawthorn Cottage · The Birches · Holly House · Elm Lodge · The Beeches · Cedar House · Yew Tree Cottage

Classic cottage and country names

Rose Cottage · Ivy Cottage · The Old Rectory · Church Farm · The Granary · The Old Barn · Stable Cottage · Mill House · The Coach House · Orchard Barn

Names from the view or setting

Hill View · Riverside · Brookside · Fieldside · Westwinds · Sunnyside · Long Meadow · Tor View · Seaview · The Croft

Welsh and Scottish names

Bryn Awel (breezy hill) · Tŷ Gwyn (white house) · Hafod (summer dwelling) · Croeso (welcome) · Ardmore (great height) · Glenview · Strathmore · Bonnie Brae · Tigh na Mara (house by the sea) · Craigside

Personal and family names

Combine names or initials ("Jamesons"), use a meaningful place ("Cornwall House"), or name it after a much-loved pet ("Milo's Lodge"). A family surname with "House" or "Cottage" is a classic choice.

How to choose

  • Say it out loud. It should be easy to spell over the phone.
  • Check your street. Avoid a name already used nearby, which can confuse deliveries.
  • Keep it short enough to display. Shorter names read better on a gate, a sign or a doormat.
  • Think about the character of the house. "The Old Rectory" suits a period home better than a new-build.

Making it official

If you'd like your house name to be used in your official address, contact your local council's street naming and numbering team. If your home has a number, you'll usually need to keep using it alongside the name.

Show it off at the door

Once you've chosen a name, put it where visitors see it first. The House Name prints your house name in clean, classic lettering on a natural coir doormat, with an optional second line such as "WELCOME HOME". House names of up to 20 characters fit, and the Large and Extra large sizes give longer names extra room.
