What size doormat do I need for my front door?
Short answer: choose a doormat that covers most of the width of your door. Aim for about 80% of the door's width, or a little wider. For most UK front doors a 60 × 40 cm mat suits a single door, a 70 × 40 cm mat looks more generous, and a 90 × 60 cm mat suits wide doors, double doors and large porches.
How to measure your door
- Measure the door's width from one side of the frame to the other.
- Measure the space in front of it. Check how far the mat can sit out from the door before it reaches a step, path edge or porch wall.
- Check the gap under the door if the mat will sit just inside. Our mats are about 15 mm thick, so the door needs to open over them without catching.
Which size suits which door?
| Mat size (width × depth) | Best for |
|---|---|
| 60 × 40 cm | Most single front and back doors, narrow porches, flats |
| 70 × 40 cm | Single doors where you want a fuller look, or a little extra room for longer house names |
| 90 × 60 cm | Wide doors, double or French doors, and large covered porches |
A mat that's much narrower than the door can look lost. One that's wider than the doorway can look deliberate and welcoming, as long as it doesn't hang over a step.
Does the wording affect the size I need?
It can. Short wording, like a house number or a single initial, looks good on any size. A long house name or a two-line message has more space to breathe on a 70 × 40 cm or 90 × 60 cm mat, so the letters can be printed larger and are easier to read from the path.
Where should a coir doormat go?
Natural coir is best at a covered, dry entrance, such as under a porch, canopy or overhang, or just inside the door. It shouldn't be left in open rain. Our guide to using a coir doormat outside explains why.
